Japanese photographer Natsumi Hayashi is fascinated with levitation. By carefully adjusting the shutter speed on her camera and gracefully leaping into the air, she captures magical self-portraits wherein time and gravity are suspended in a series of transient moments. By freeing herself from gravity, she also becomes liberated from social conventions, able to just be herself. Hayashis images find place in a range of everyday settings, from metro stations and city sidewalks to empty buildings and natural backdrops. When photographing from a distance or among crowds of people, artist Hisaji Hara assists with taking the pictures. Includes an interview with Hayashi.

If you've seen her internet website, http://yowayowacamera.com/ , then the photos you will see in this book are the ones taken in January, February, and March of 2011. She started sporadically doing levitation photos in 2010, but neither those photos or the levitation photos from April and May of 2011, are in this book. Its a slight disappointment, especially since the ones from April 2011 are what got me really interested in her work. Plus, it doesn't seem like she will release a second book with those works in it anytime soon. Still, this is a book worth having in your collection.Product details
