I had just binged on Jake Undone and Jake Understood and just had to have more. I wasn't quite sure what i was getting into with Gemini, other than it was Jake's sister's story, that they hadn't known each other growing up, and that her husband had withheld a BIG secret from her before they got their HEA. As I was already convinced I liked this author's style, I decided to delve right into it. I can say there were no regrets, even though Jake wasn't much more than a few mentions in this one.Allison was working as a waitress after the death of the only mother she had ever known, even though she did know she had been part of a closed adoption at birth. She wanted to go back to school to finish a degree working with special needs children, but wanted to take some time for herself after her loss, and wanted to be able to pay her own way. Then one day HE came into the diner. There was a deep attraction on both sides, but he let us know, repeatedly, that she was the one woman he couldn't ever have. Why not? Ha! If you think I am going to drop a spoiler like that, I doubt you have read any of my other reviews. It is a true doozie though....I can honestly say it was a very unique dilemna Cedric found himself in. As many books as I read (generally between 20 and 30 per month) I can still honestly say I have never come across plot twists quite like this one.
But Allison and Cedric are both very dynamic characters, aside from the chemistry that leaps of the pages between them. Allison has such a good soul, and is so good with the autistic people she works with outside of her diner shifts. (And I guarantee you will never see Wonder Woman in quite the same light again - I am still getting the giggles about it. Anderson Cooper is an obsession of another client. It is really nice to see autism being handled in such a respectful and normal fashion as Ms. Ward has slipped autistic characters into several of her books.)
The shallowness Cedric sees his life consisting of is handled in a revealing way as well. His struggles over this, and so many other issues, make him an endearing hero, even if my number one reason for reading the book was to learn more about Jake. And I guess we do learn a bit more about how Jake came to be the heartthrob he proved himself to be in Jake Undone and Jake Understood, but the book is not about him. The fact that there was less Jake than expected takes nothing away from the power of this book.
Does the mainstoryline seem a bit unbelievable, as some negative reviews have suggested? Yes, it is a bit much, but I am easily able to over look this for several reasons. The first and foremost being the core reason we read fiction in general, and more specifically romances, is to escape from our daily doldrums, correct? So suspend your disbelief long enough to embrace a powerful, if rather angsty, story. ( And if you don't want angst in your romances, Penelope Ward is probably not the author for you.) Secondly, has there been nothing in your life that would be unbelievable if it hadn't happened to you? I know there is more than one situation in my life that falls under that category. There are other reasons that I don't have a problem giving authors the benefit of the doubt, but I don't feel like spending the time discussing those really has a place in this review. In short, yes, there are parts of this story that may be hard to embrace as they first appear in the book, but for me, it was certainly worth putting aside any feelings of how unlikely the scenario may be to enjoy the whole of the story. I had no problem letting my heart feel the struggles of both the hero and heroine, and to me, that is what reading romance is all about.
In the end, I truly still want more Jake, but I don't regret a moment spent with Allison and Cedric. While I may long for more of Jake and Nina for some time to come, I don't doubt that Allison and Cedric will pop up in memories with fond smiles from time to time for at least months to come as well. As I mentioned I am a very avid reader, so it takes a memorable plot and even more memorable characters to stick with me. Every character of Penelope Ward's that I have discovered so far definitely fits that bill.
For mature audiences only for explicit sexual situations, and a trigger warning for an attempted rape.

Gemini (Audible Audio Edition) Penelope Ward Therese Plummer Eric Michael Summerer Audible Studios Books Reviews
Gemini by Penelope Ward is a heartfelt story that made me laugh, cry and feel just about every emotion in between. I could not put this book down and I burned through the pages as I couldn't wait to find out what would happen next! It is the first in a series of books, but can be read as a stand alone.
This tells the story of Allison and Cedric. Allison has recently lost her mother and is regrouping after that loss. She is working at a diner and the last thing she expect is to have her life completely unhinged after meeting a devastatingly handsome customer one mundane Monday Afternoon.
Cedric has been searching for Allison, but is completely unprepared for actually meeting her. As he fights tormented past, he does all he can not to wreck his future!
Penelope Ward has written an unbelievable story line in this book. The characters are phenomenal. Their chemistry and connections dive right into your heart and do not let go. If you are new to her work, you will be delighted to know there are more books to come with these same amazing characters and more!
I just finished “ My Skylar” and grabbed all titles I could by Ms. Ward. Maybe if the previous book had not been amazing, intense, (yes, I do know this is not a review for “My Skylar”) I would have enjoyed this more. I found myself skipping pages to the big reveal. No spoilers here, but if I had known (on ) that answers come at 66% and 76% I would have saved sometime. I got most answers and just quit. The secret I thought had a horrid resolution and I just could not. You already know what I am going to recommend instead. I am impressed by author though.
Side note Autism. Plays a big role in this book. I read Ms. Ward has a daughter on the spectrum so she is able to write about the affliction without resorting to cliches. I, too, am the parent of a child, 23, of autism. I have been saddened to not see someone more like my kid (high IQ, mediocre skills..because talk about catch 22) , but I appreciate the ABA and lack of suggestion that people afflicted are not deeply loved.
OMG.... I don't know if I can put words together to describe this book. How it made me feel. To say I loved does not do it justice. First let me say that I loved that Allison worked with special needs children/adults because I have a daughter that has Down syndrome. That touched my heart. There was so may twist and turns on this book. It just keep surprising me. Allison works as a waitress and waits on Cedric, but does not know why she is so drawn to him. Cedric could not believe his reaction to Allison and wants to get to get to know her. As they get close Cedric knows he has to tell her the truth, but he is scared as to how she will feel or if he loses her before he truly had her ?
I made it half way through and gave up. I actually just checked the author and was shocked this is by Penelope ward. I freaking love her other books!! this was just all sorts of bad! if I'm 50% through the book and have no idea what secret the main character's big secret is, (though I'm pretty sure i guessed it) at this point I don't care!
I'm upgrading my review from 1 star to 2 because the autism bit of the story I enjoyed reading and a it gave a good depiction of it IMO. However, I felt like it lacked depth and a genuineness that Ive come to expect from a Penelope ward novel. this just rang false for me on a lot of levels and though the. bad steers have chemistry, I'm not waiting till the end of the book to figure out what the big secret is and to see movement in the story. I'm over the oh he's so hot, she's so hot I must have her-cue steamy scene crap with no real substance.
